Professional Training and Further Education

Definition, Explanation

In further vocational education, according to the principle of life-long learning, your professional knowledge and abilities are extended, adapted or new acquired. In some occupations, regular further education is statutory, in others, it is necessary for keeping up to date especially in technical matters and for remaining competent to be able to fulfil customers’ wishes. It includes educational programmes improving social competencies, teaching management-knowledge or new methods and “instruments”.

Especially people who have been out of work due to unemployment, parental leave or family break, sabbatical, disease or other reasons, are advised to get educated when recommencing. Seminars, studies, courses, workshops, learning material are offered by public and private institutions as evening-schools, universities and other education centres.

During unemployment or after disease, the paying of the education is potentially provided by the German labour agency or insurances, in cases of a company-ordered education by the employer. In all other cases, you pay for yourself. In certain cases like for longer-lasting measures as apprenticeship training or MBA schooling, you can as well agree with your employer to share the costs.

Tips, Checklist

  • Inform yourself about education suitable and necessary for you
  • Use opportunities to get informed by educational institutions about contents and teaching methods in trial lessons, public presentations and alumni-meetings
  • Think in how far you are apt for correspondence courses / distant learning, distant training, respective e-learning and computer-based trainings
  • Clarify for yourself and with your family the requirements as time, expenses and other framework conditions
  • Talk to your boss or employer about education you are intending to take
  • Ask your employer if they support your intended education in terms of time and in terms of expenses
  • Use possibilities to go on educational leave, also the educational bonus benefit
