Unsolicited Application
Definition, Explanation
Unsolicited or spontaneous applying is when you apply somewhere without a free job having been explicitely announced. Especially recommendable it is to apply unsolicitedly with your favoured employer where you mostly wish to work and can use your competences best.
Tips, Checklist
- Some companies do not at all advertise their jobs. Alternatively, they offer web-forms for unsolicited application. Always check if your favourite employer provides this
- Even in an unsolicited application, you should apply for a specified job or position and describe your idea of the range of duties concretely and realistically
- Stress your reasons why you want to work just in that company or institution, and why you fit that job best
- Inform as well as possible about the company – web, press, friends – and figure out the right, professional person to adress
- Contact that person and the respective personnel department. This can be done by phone or, even better, via some person you know and who can make direct contact
- Spend at least as much care and effort on an unsolicited application as you would spend on an application responding to an advert
